Cinema attendance offered contrasted results during the first half of 2014 as Danish films fell 9% while Norway climbed by a record 83.2%. A noticeable element in the countries’ respective Top charts is the presence of Monica Z (Waltz for Monica), number nine in Denmark and The 100 year-old Man Who Climbed out the Window and Disappeared, number six in Norway.

Denmark: Theatrical reality check after strong 2013
Foreign and domestic films have had a tough ride in Danish cinemas the first six months of 2014, as total admissions have fallen by 15% to 5.6 million compared to the same period last year, one of the lowest levels in the last five years according to figures published by the Danish Film Institute. While US films seem to have stabilised after several years of downfall, Danish films have had the lowest results since 2010 with a 25% market share for 1,435,455 admissions, against a 34% share and 2,195,460 admissions the same period in 2013.

Nevertheless, three Danish films were still in the Top 10, with the comedy The Reunion 2 -The Funeral taking the top of the charts, ahead of Frost. Other Danish hits were the latest Father of Four film franchise, third biggest film so far and Pernille Fischer Christensen’s Someone You Love at number eight, followed by the Swedish biopic Monica Z directed by the Dane Per Fly.

Norwegian films in five year high
Once more, kids fare have boosted cinema attendance in Norway and Doctor Proctor’s farting experiment in Arild Fröhlich’s film propelled admissions for local films to 1,061,985, up 83.2% from the same period in 2013. The 20.9% market share is the highest in the last five years and the fourth best in the last decade.

If Doctor Proctor’s Fart Powder took the top of the charts in the first half of 2014, the children’s film for under-7 year old - Casper & Emma’s Winter Vacation - was the fourth most popular cinema choice.

Another pleasant surprise in the Top 10 Norway is the sixth place for the Swedish comedy The 100 year-old Man  Who Climbed out the Window and Disappeared that beat US blockbusters such as The Lego Movie and X-Men.

Total admissions in Norway were up 1.7% to 5,080,756.
