Danish films had an excellent start of 2015, securing a 35% share of the cinema audience in a market up 18.5% compared to the same period in 2014. On the opposite end Norway took a blow with one of the lowest domestic admissions in years (3.8%) despite stable cinema attendance (+ 1.2%).

Denmark: heading off to record year
Half way through 2015, Denmark is enjoying one of the best cinema attendances in years. So far 6.8 million cinemas tickets have been sold, up 18.5% from the same period in 2014 according to the Danish Film Institute. Thanks to a wide array of films, 2.4 million Danes have watched a local film on the silver screen, which represents 35% of the market, up 10% from last year at the same period.

“The line-up for the second half of the year is very promising and a total of 15 million admissions is not an unrealistic result. If this becomes reality it will be the highest number in 34 years, which is all the more impressive considering the increased competition from digital streaming services,” said Martin Kofoed Hansen, DFI analyst consultant.

-The top selling Danish documentary during the first six months was Shadow of a Hero (Skyggen a fen helt) by Laurits Munch Petersen (2,694 admissions).
-The top documentary and Nordic film (non-national) was the Swedish film Björn Afzelius: Tusen Bitar (15,613 tickets) by Magnus Gertten and Stefan Berg.

Norway: Dramatic fall for local fare
Over 5.1 million Norwegians watched a movie in a local cinema the first half of 2015, up 1.2% compared to the same period last year This is the second best result since 2011 according to Film & Kino. However the positive cinema-going trend did not benefit Norwegian films that hit a record low market share of 3.8% from only 194.626 total admissions. The downslide – partly due to a lack of crowd-pulling Norwegian titles and premieres lined up -was particularly sharp compared to the same period in 2014, when Norwegian films had a 20.9% market share, thanks to family films such as Doctor Proctor’s Fart Powder and Casper & Emma’s Winter Vacation.

The sequels Doctor Proctor Bubble in the Bathtub and Casper and Emma on Safari lined up for the second half of 2015 should hopefully reverse the downward trend, alongside three other family films based on well-known material, and The Wave, Norway’s first disaster movie. “My predictions is that we will end up somewhere near a 20% market share for Norwegian films by the end of the year,” said Stine Helgeland, Executive Director, Promotion & International Relations at the Norwegian Film Institute.

-The top Norwegian documentary for the first six months was Brothers/Brødre by Aslaug Holm (9.591 admissions).
-The top Nordic (non-Norwegian) film was the Danish adventure epic The Shamer’s Daughter by Kenneth Kainz (17.945 admissions).
