The Danish production company behind the Oscar nominated The Act of Killing has just started a Kickstarter viral campaign to raise $60,000 towards the financing of its new political documentary Democrazy directed by Andreas Dalsgaard (pictured - Afghan Muscles, The Human Scale).

Dalsgaard’s new film focuses on Colombian philosopher/mathematician turned politician Antanas Mockus and his unorthodox methods to fight against violence and corruption. The film follows Mockus, -a former mayor of Bogotà-through his bid to run in Colombia’s 2010 presidential elections as candidate of the Green Movement, with the backing of the younger generation who hope for change. Katherin Miranda, leader of the youth movement is the narrator of the film.

Dalsgaard who has spent five years working on Democrazy is collaborating on the film with editor Janus Billeskov Jansen (The Hunt, The Act of Killing) and composer Kristian Eidnes Andersen (Melancholia, Only God Forgives).

The film produced by Signe Byrge Sørensen and Anne Köhncke for Final Cut for Real has received support from the Danish Film Institute, the Irish Film Board (through Irish co-producer SP Films), DR, SVT, as well as grants from Tribeca Gucci Foundation and the Danish Ministry of Education. But more funds are needed to lock the shooting, editing and prepare for the film’s launch and distribution.  “Even at the best of times, financing documentaries is a struggle. We experience a growing audience interest in our films and a global interest in documentaries as a genre, but finance is still scarce, especially for films dealing with complex, international issues. However, when the films are finished there is clearly an audience. This time, we will try to engage the audience early on, through Kickstarter”, said Sørensen.

The plan for Final Cut for Real is to release Democrazy in the autumn 2014.

Previous Nordic documentaries that successfully raised financing through the Kickstarter crowd-funding platform include The Pirate Bay Away from Keyboard, Big Boys Gone Bananas! and Living Without Money.
