Nimbus Film has hired Henrik Ruben Genz (pictured, Terribly Happy/Borgen) to direct Tordenskiold, based on the life of the flamboyant and charismatic 17th century Norwegian/Danish naval hero. The project scripted by Norway’s Erlend Loe just received production support from the Danish and Norwegian film institutes.

Known for their dark and satirical humour, Ruben Genz and Loe should bring an interesting twist to the portrait of the Vice Admiral Tordenskiold who had a heroic but short life as he died aged 28 in a duel about a woman. Set in 1720, the film will focus on Tordenskiold as he sets on an odyssey through Denmark and Germany. Everywhere he is celebrated for his victory over the Swedes at the battle of Dynekilen. But problems start to pile up.

Nimbus Film producer Lars Bredo Rahbek says: “Our ambition is to avoid the dusty tendencies of many biopics and deliver an original, entertaining and full-blown surprise of a period film”. Hummel Film in Norway is co-producing the NOK40 million project set to start filming late 2014. Delivery is set for 2015. SF Norge will handle the distribution in Norway. Three other European co-productions received backing from the Norwegian Film Institute.
The majority Norwegian co-production Løvekvinnen (Lion Woman) produced by Filmkameratene, the story of a woman in the early 20th century who was born with hair all over her body, the Swedish film Så ock på Jorden by Kay Pollak and Dutch film Beyond Sleep
