The DKK 3.3 million project is a UK/Danish co-production between Peapie Films’s Kris Thykier (Kick Ass, The Debt) and Meta Film’s Meta Louise Foldager (A Royal Affair/Melancholia). “Kris started the project and brought it to me, with Hanway Films attached. The international interest was there first”, told Foldager to nordiskfilmogtvfond.com.
Hanway Films has handled in the past the Norwegian Golden Globe nominee Kon-Tiki and is currently working on Lone Scherfig’s upcoming black comedy Posh.
The London-based sales company describes Denmark’92 as ‘a comedy of underdogs’, the true story of how Richard Møller Nielsen – nicknamed Ricardo - united his unprepared mismatched team of players to win against world champions Germany at the 1992 European Championship Finals.
Speaking about the project to the Danish Film Institute’s Filmupdate, Barfoed said: “The film about the European Championship '92 is a dream project for me. As a boy, I saw many matches with my dad and we were also in Gothenburg and saw Richard’s boys win the final against Germany. It was a mad scramble and a crazy summer that brought Danes together on one common dream”.
Barfoed’s previous films include The Candidate and UK/US action thriller The Number Station starring John Cusack. The project that just received a DKK6.5 million production grant from the Danish Film Institute is set to start filming late August. SF has Scandinavian rights.
