Iceland’s star director/producer Baltasar Kormákur is set to direct the crime series Trapped for his new television arm at RVK Studios. At MIPTV in Cannes, the show was represented internationally by Dynamic Television based in L.A., Paris and Berlin.

Produced by Kormákur and Magnus Vidar Sigurdsson, Trapped is the most ambitious local TV drama ever commissioned by Icelandic pubcaster RUV. Dynamic TV’s Daniel March (former exec VP of Echo Bridge Entertainment) and Klaus Zimmermann (producer of Borgia, Transporter) are executive producers and Danish pubcaster DR is co-financing.

Based on an idea by Kormákur and written by Sigurjón Kjartansson and Clive Bradley, the 10x60’ show in the Icelandic language is set to start filming this fall. Trapped follows the investigation of a grisly murder of a man found in the water shortly after a ferry carrying 300 passengers from Denmark arrives in a small town at the bottom of a fjord. Shortly after, a powerful blizzard hits the town, making the only road in or out impassable. “I developed Trapped because I was fascinated with the idea of a terrible crime in a small town cut off from the rest of the world,” said the director. “I am looking forward to putting a new spin on the Scandinavian crime genre for audiences around the world and I’m equally excited to be partnering with Dan and Klaus at Dynamic.”

At MIPTV, US executive March told nordiskfilmogtvfond.com that he was thrilled to be collaborating again with Kormákur whom he met while selling the director’s English language thriller Inhale for Echo Bridge Entertainment.

According to Zimmermann, interest from world buyers at MIPTV has been amazing. “Everybody wanted to close deals and we’ve had more than one offer in each territory. The potential of Trapped is huge and it can easily be made into three seasons”.

The estimated delivery date for the Icelandic crime drama is spring 2015.
Meanwhile Kormákur is busy filming the epic adventure Everest for Universal Pictures, Cross Creek Pictures and Working Title Films. The film will be released in the US on Sept. 18, 2015.
