Scandinavian film giant Nordisk Film has partnered a consortium of nine leading filmed entertainment companies in the new venture Globalgate set up to exploit the remake potential of local-language films around the world.

Other partners in the Globalgate consortium include Lionsgate in the US, Gaumont in France, Tobis in Germany, Belga in Benelux, TME in Turkey, Televisa /Videocine in Mexico, Kadokawa in Japan and Lotte Entertainment in South Korea.

Headed by US studio Lionsgate and US entertainment executives Paul Presburger, William Pfeiffer and Clifford Werber, Globalgate Entertainment will enable Nordisk Film’s catalogue of 1,200 titles to be offered to the other members of the network for production as local language films and vice versa - the Scandinavian group will have priority access to IPs controlled by its partners as well as third-party properties identified by Globalgate, to produce them as local remakes. The films will be distributed by the consortium’s partners and co-financed by the affiliated Globalgate Fund.

Among the Scandinavian films to be offered for remake are the Danish comedies Klassefesten/The Reunion (already successfully remade in Finland and Estonia), Oh Happy Day, Lykkevej, Lotto and the children’s franchise the Olsen Gang films.

Kenneth Wiberg, Senior Vice-President at Nordisk Film said: "Although we have produced local language films for almost 110 years, we have over the past years experienced an enormous increase in interest from abroad in regards to Nordic content and IPs including a huge demand for international remakes of our films. With Globalgate, and by adding an experienced network of dedicated partners, we expect to be able to capitalise even better on our extensive Scandinavian produced film library."

Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said: “By aligning ourselves with some of the top content companies in the world, Globalgate provides us with an opportunity to grow our presence in local-language films, leverage the content in our library and further mine exciting new IP and talent around the world.”
