Yesterday Ruben Östlund (pictured) came closer to securing a place in the Oscars nominations as his Swedish drama Force Majeure (Turist) picked up the coveted Golden Globe nomination from the Hollywood Foreign Association in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The film was supported by Nordisk Film & TV Fond.

Force Majeure has had a very successful festival and world distribution exposure since its world premiere in Cannes 2014. The film produced by Erik Hemmendorff, Marie Kjellsson and Philippe Bober is currently playing in US cinemas via Magnolia Pictures and received rave reviews in the US press. It is also running for this Saturday’s EFA awards in the Best Film and Best Director categories.

Last time Sweden had a Golden Globe nominee was in 2008 with Maria Larsson’s Everlasting Moments.

Force Majeure will compete in the Foreign Language Film category against the Polish/Danish film Ida, Russian film Leviathan, Estonian film Tangerines and Israeli Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem.

Other Nordic front runners for a Golden Globe include Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, vying for Best Original Score-Motion Picture for his contribution to the Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything. Norwegian director Morten Tyldum’s English language debut The Imitation Game is one of the top nominees with five nods including Best Motion Picture-Drama.
The 72nd Golden Globe ceremony will unfold on Sunday January 11, 2015.
