Camilla Nielsson’s political drama Democrats took home the Best Nordic Documentary Award and Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Look of Silence the Best Audience Award at Nordisk Panorama that closed on Wednesday. The two titles were supported by Nordisk Film & TV Fond.

The €11,000 Nordisk Panorama award to Democrats comes on top of a handful of major accolades gathered by the Upfront Films production over the past year, including Best Documentary at Tribeca. The film focusing on the process of creating a new constitution in Zimbabwe won over the Nordisk Panorama Jury for its ‘complexity, attentiveness to details, ability to tell the story in artful and concise way and unprecedented access to the events.”

The second award in the Best Nordic Documentary category or Honorary Mention was handed out to the Swedish film Martha & I  by Tora Mårtens featuring two hip hop dancers.

Oppenheimer’s The Look of Silence was the top Audience choice among the 42 Nordic shorts and docs that screened in the main programme.

The €7.000 Best Nordic Short Film Award went to The Pride of Strathmoor by Icelandic director Einar Balvin, a graduate from LA University of Southern California.

Finally two Norwegian promising talents impressed the New Nordic Voice jury that handed out their €3,500 top prize to Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel for Bird Hearts (Nordic Talents entry 2015) and second prize to Anne Hjort Guttu for This Place is Every Place.

The Nordisk Panorama-Nordic Short &Doc Film Festival hosted around 9,000 industry guests in Malmö. Next year Norway will be the Nordic country in Focus.
