Last Sunday between 20.00 and 21.00, two out of three Danes watched the first episode of Ole Bornedal’s anticipated war and love epic 1864 on DR1. “1864 had 1,690,000 viewers and a share of 67 percent! It’s a very amazing start! We are so excited,” said DR’s Head of Drama Piv Bernth to nordiskfilmogtvfond.com.

“The series has caused a lot of debate in Denmark about that particular period in Danish history and that’s great. We like to set an agenda with our series and this is no exception. We look forward to the next seven weeks,” she continued.

Producers Peter Bose and Jonas Allen (Miso Film) also said: “1864 is a magnificent piece of Danish history, art and craftsmanship. Producing this epic drama has been challenging and mind blowing, and we are extremely proud that so many viewers have embraced the series.”

The opening episode of 1864 had the best audience share for a DR drama since the 2004 show Kroniken (Better Times) that was watched by 2,240,000 people, representing a 78 percent share, but as stressed by DR, a decade ago the television market wasn’t quite the same. Recent DR hit series such as The Legacy and Borgen Season 3 had stronger openings (around 1.8 million viewers each for the first episode) but lower shares of 60 percent and 57 percent respectively.

At MIPCOM SF International was actively negotiating the series with world buyers. Rights have already been picked up by several major broadcasters including TV4 Sweden, TV2 Norway, YLE, RUV, BBC and ARTE, as well as Lumiere in Benelux and Arrow Films UK for DVD.

1864 was supported by Nordisk Film & TV Fond.
