After Harald Zwart, Tommy Wirkola, Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, Roar Uthaug (pictured) is the latest Norwegian director set to make his English language debut in Hollywood.

According to the trade magazine Hollywood Reporter, the director of The Wave is set to direct for MGM and Warner Bros a reboot version of the Tomb Raider franchise. The project featuring archaeologist Lara Croft from the hit video game will be produced by Academy-award winning GK Films (Argo) which acquired rights from the entertainment company Square Enix.

The Lara Croft character was last played on screen by Angelina Jolie in 2001 and 2003.

A former student of the Norwegian Film School in Lillehammer, Uthaug has directed four features and cut his teeth on genre films. His latest effort The Wave, Norway’s Oscar hopeful, was his ticket to Hollywood. Norway’s first disaster movie produced by Fantefilm with support from Nordisk Film & TV Fond is this year’s biggest hit at the Norwegian box office with 825,899 admissions. The film was sold to numerous world territories by TrustNordisk including to StudioCanal in the UK and Magnolia Pictures in the US that plans to release it in cinemas and on-demand in March 2016.
