August 1, 2010 Lars von Trier's much anticipated psychological disaster movie Melancholia started filming July 22 at Film i Väst Trollhättan studios in Sweden. A press conference was held on July 26 attended by the Danish director and cast members including Kiefer Sutherland, Kirsten Dunst, (photo) Stellan Skarsgård, Jesper Christensen, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Charlotte Rampling and John Hurt. The film was produced by Zentropa in co-production with Sweden (Memfis Film), France (Slot Machine), and Germany (Zentropa International Köln), with support - among others - from Nordisk Film & TV Fond. New Film Conmissioner At DFI
August 3, 2010 Klara Grunning-Harris, (photo) has been appointed as the new commissioning editor for short films and documentaries at the Danish Film Institute. Grunning-Harris was raised in Sweden and studied art in Paris, before moving to San Francisco where she enrolled for a film production course at the Academy of Art University in 1997. Since 1999, she has been working for ITVS (Independent Television Service) in San Francisco where she helped build the international co-production department. She will take up her post on September 15.
Let The Right Star Plays Norwegian Footballer
August 4, 2010 Kåre Hedebrant, (photo) who played the main character of Oskar in the 2008 Swedish cult movie Let the Right One In, has joined the team of the Norwegian film Amors baller, currently shooting in Oslo. Hedebrant plays Lucas, a Swedish teenager who moves to a small Norwegian town, and falls in love with the goalkeeper on the local girl's football team. Among the adult actors is Fridtjov Såheim (The Art of Negative Thinking). The romantic comedy is the first feature film for Kristoffer Metcalfe, a former graduate of the Norwegian Film School in Lillehammer. Frederick Howard is producing for SF Norge. The domestic release is set for March 2011.
Moomins Invade Finnish Screens
August 5, 2010 Maria Lindberg's Moomins and the Comet Chase (Muumi ja punainen pyrstötähti), the first Nordic stereoscopic 3D animation film is hitting Finnish screens on August 6, released by FS Film on 35 prints (including 24 digital). The film produced by Tom Carpelan (Filmkompaniet) with support from Nordisk Film & TV Fond was launched at the last Cannes Film Festival. Icelandic pop star Björk who composed the theme song was on hand for the gala screening of the animation film this Monday. Visit the official website - click here.
Power To The Pixel - October 13, 14, 2010
July 13, 2010 Power to the Pixel has announces the Pixel Market which will take place on 13 and 14 October 2010 in London. Applications are now open to find 20 of the world's best cross-media projects. Up to 10 of the teams will compete for the £6,000 ARTE PIXEL PITCH PRIZE at Power to the Pixel's public event. Producers will present their cross-media project to a handpicked roundtable of international judges. Entries are invited from producer-led teams with projects at an advanced stage of development. Margreth Olin Wins Liv Ullmann Ærespris
June 24, 2010 Norwegian producer/director Margreth Olin (photo) has been awarded the prestigious Liv Ullmann Ærespris (Honorary Award) and its NOK100,000 cash prize. The award is given out to a female filmmaker who has distinguished herself as a filmmaker and in her artistic contribution to Norwegian cinema or TV drama. Previous winners were actress Ane Dahl Torp (2006) and filmmaker Anja Breien (2008). This year's jury consisted of Nina Refseth, Head of the Norwegian Film Institute, Gunnar Løvvik, managing director of the Norwegian International Film Festival in Haugesund, and Sverre Pedersen, head of the Norwegian Film Workers' Association.
Zentropa Gets €1.2m From Eurimages
June 23, 2010 Zentropa's upcoming Melancholia by Lars von Trier and A Royal Affair (Caroline Mathildes år) by Nikolaj Arcel have each received €600,000 from the Council of Europe's Eurimages production fund. Melancholia is co-produced with Sweden (Memfis Film), France (Slot Machine) and Zentropa International Köln (Germany). Filming will start in Sweden on July 19 with Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kirsten Dust, Alexander and Stellan Skarsgård in leading roles. A Royal Affair is co-produced with Sweden (Trollhättan AB), Latvia (Film Angel Studios) and Ireland (Subotica Entertainment). The film tells the story of a young queen who is married to an insane king. Both films were supported by Nordisk Film & TV Fond.

Who is invited: The Nordic Film industry and Nordic film school graduation students of 2010 are invited. Nordic Talents is free of charge and includes lunch, dinner, coffee and tea etc. Special hotel rates are also available. There is a maximum of 200 participants - based on first come first serve.

Varg Veum Festival On US TV
June 21, 2010 Mid-July, the US independent, non-commercial TV broadcaster MHz Network is going to bring to 27 million US households the Norwegian crime series Varg Veum produced by Miso Film and SF, with support from Nordisk Film & TV Fond. It's the first time the US broadcaster makes such a strong focus on one of its series from its international mystery slot. The six Varg Veum films based on Gunnar Staalesen best-selling novels will be aired every night at 9pm, From July 12-17, followed by exclusive documentaries and interviews with the author. Six new films have been produced; the first, The Writing on the Wall, will be released theatrically in Norway on August 27.
Norwegian War Docs At Grimstad Fest
June 17, 2010 More than 140 international short films and documentaries are screening this week at the Norwegian Short Film Festival in Grimstad, (June 16-21). The Norwegian documentary competition section has 14 films in selection. The main focus this year is on conflict, crisis and war. Screenings include Facing Genocide by David Aronowitsch and Staffan Lindberg, Sarajevo Ricochet by Ola Flyum and Russian Lessons by Olga Konskaya and Andrei Nekrasov, all supported by Nordisk Film & TV Fond. Swedish films are well represented in the festival's international competition programme with by Fredrik Andersson, Jonas Odell and Ruben Östlund.
Angela Kovács Makes Six More Irene Huss Films
June 16, 2010 Swedish actress Angela Kovács (photo) will return as the Gothenburg-base inspector Irene Huss in a new series of six films produced for TV and DVD by Illusion Film and Yellow Bird in cooperation with Sweden's Kanal 5, Germany's ARD Degeto, Nordisk Film and Film I Väst. The first film in the new series is based on Helene Tursten's upcoming novel Den som vakar i mörkret to be published in August. The other films are based on the novels A man with a small face, The deceitful web and on original stories by the Swedish crime novelist. The first Irene Huss series sold around 500,000 DVD copies in Sweden. It is to be broadcast on Kanal 5 in the autumn.
Nordic Films Sweep The Floor At Festroia
June 15, 2010 Norwegian gangster comedy A Somewhat Gentle Man by Hans Petter Moland won Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor (Stellan Skarsgärd) plus Best Script (Kim Fupz Aakeson) at the recent Festroia Film Festival in Portugal. Finnish film Heartbeats by Saara Cantell won a Special Jury Prize and Danish film A Family by Pernille Fischer Christensen won Best Cinematography (Jakob Ihre). Thomas Vinterberg's Submarino picked up the Audience Award and A Family the ‘Signis Prize' from a Catholic Jury. Finland's Letters to Father Jacob won the award ‘Man and his Environment' and Gimme Some Respect by Pekka Karjalainen a Special Mention. The Swedish film Sebbe by Babak Najafi received the First Works Award.
