Borgen actor Mikael Birkkjær has joined the cast.

The fourth season of the cult series The Bridge (Broen/Bron) is currently shooting in the Danish capital.

Besides Birkkjær, Fanny Leander Bornedal (daughter of Danish director Ole Bornedal) who played in DR’s Christmas calendar series The Other World is also among the new faces cast alongside the main acting duo Sofia Helin -aka Saga Noren- and Thure Lindhardt who plays Danish detective Henrik Sabroe.

According to the Copenhagen Film Fund, a larger part of the story written by Hans Rosenfeldt and Camilla Ahlgren takes place in Copenhagen and more Danish crew workers are attached than in previous seasons. Based on the estimated Danish spend of €1.7 million in the capital region and the show’s international acclaim, the Fund has agreed to chip in €470,664 in the production spearheaded by Sweden’s Filmlance International and Denmark’s Nimbus Film. Other partners include DR, SVT, ZDF, ZDF Enterprises, Film i Skåne, NRK, Lumière Group, Ystad-Österlen Film Foundation, the EU's Creative Europe Programme and Nordvision.

The Copenhagen Film Fund had already invested a healthy DKK 4.4m (around €591,000) in The Bridge season 3 based on an estimated minimum Danish spend of €2.2 million, and the production team ended up spending €3.5 million.

Thomas Gammeltoft, Copenhagen Film Fund’s CEO said: "TV-series often have a high spend due to the many episodes and long shooting period. With The Bridge III we experienced a spend six times the size of our investment and on our recent investment in the Red Arrow-production Embassy Down no less than nine times the investment. We will of course continue to invest in features, but will start looking more in the direction of TV-series.”

The Bridge season 4 will premiere on SVT and DR on January 1st, 2018.
