Three local films with well-known IP take top 3 places in annual charts. Domestic admissions hit 2,480,000, national market share 29%.
This is the second-best result ever in modern time statistics (since 1970) for Finnish films. Only 2015 was a stronger year with a 29.9% market share according to preliminary figures from the Finnish Film Foundation.
Walt Disney Nordic scored with two local films dominating the Top 10: Ricky Rapper and the Nighthawk (345,684 admissions) and Angry Birds-The Movie (336,373), followed by Nordisk Film’s Tatu and Patu (320,671). The Scandi distribution group had another two local films in the top 5: the comedy Reunion 2 (291,311) and the documentary Tale of a Lake (186,689).
Last year’s top-selling Nordic (non-Finnish) film was the Swedish drama comedy A Man Called Ove (44,408 admissions)
General admissions reached 8.7 million (8.8 million in 2015)
Harri Ahokas, Head of the Distribution department at the Finnish Film Foundation said: “We could call last year in Finnish cinema ‘The Year of the Brands’ as the most successful local films are based on well-known family brands. Ricky Rapper and Tatu & Patu are based on popular children book series; Angry Birds is even a global game brand and Reunion 2 is originally from Denmark [Klassefesten]. Also Rolli and the Secret of All Time [eighth biggest Finnish film] is based on locally very well-known children TV series and songs. This was the fifth film instalment and still going quite strong. “
“The top 10 of Finnish films corresponds well with the Finnish cinema audience’s tradition to make safe choices. The success of the documentary Tale of the Lake might take some people aback, but the 186,937 admissions are very close to the official amount of lakes in Finland- 187 888!”
Ahokas continues: “2017 might be a little different with more premieres based on original scripts. Internationally, we have high hopes for Aki Kaurismäki’s The Other Side of Hope and Dome Karukoski’s Tom of Finland.”
