The 6x45’ Swedish TV show tells of an odd-ball American living in Stockholm who becomes obsessed with a SEK 50 million cash reward for solving the unsolvable assassination of Sweden’s former Prime Minister Olof Palme. The original story is partly inspired by US writer/actor Schiaffino Musarra’s own experience.

“I moved to Stockholm 12 years ago with my Swedish wife,” he tells nordicfilmandtvnews.com. “When I heard about the Olof Palme murder investigation and SEK 50 million for anyone who could solve the case, I thought…It’s perfect, I’m here, I’m pretty smart, I can do this!! But then I thought of doing a mockumentary about this and the idea evolved into a TV series.”

“At the beginning, no one wanted to touch the project,” continues Schiaffino. “I was pretty unknown, the Palme unsolved case is very touchy in Sweden and people were sceptical about my idea to do a satire. My intention is to poke at the multiple conspiracy theories, private investigations and to play on the cultural clash between the American ‘can do’ attitude and Swedish approach. Eventually I put together a short script, hired a crew, shot a trailer, and when I showed it around, it changed the conversations.”

In We Got This! the main character puts together an unlikely crew of investigators including his wife, a journalist and a conspiracy theorist. Schiaffino who draws his inspiration from the Coen Brothers, said the series will be like ‘having the Big Lebowski investigating the JFK case’. The key creative team working with Schiaffino includes co-writer Santiago Gil (Veni Vidi Vici) and Academy-award nominated director Patrik Eklund (Instead of Abracadabra), also known for his darkly comical style and eccentric characters.

Jarowskij’s Head of Development Johanna Bergenstråhle, whose production credit includes the culture-clash comedy Welcome to Sweden, says We Got This! is part of her company’s strategy to increase its volume of internationally-oriented TV dramas. “We are trying to identify projects with a natural and organic potential to travel. Broadcasters are looking for edgy original shows and this new series is a perfect offer,” she noted. The series has received development money from SVT.

We Got This! is among 16 international projects selected for Series Mania’s Co-Pro Pitching sessions (May 2-4).

Jarowskij’s production team is working as well on season 3 of the hit period family drama The Restaurant (Vår tid är nu) produced for Viaplay, SVT and Film i Väst. Season 1 was a major success for the Swedish public broadcaster with over 1.7 million average consolidated viewers. Season 1 will premiere on Viaplay in the fall, when season 2 will start airing on SVT1. The third season focusing on the period 1968-1971 is currently filming.
