The event series produced by Millennium film trilogy’s Søren Stærmose for C More/TV4, was supported by Nordisk Film & TV Fond.

The eight-part suspense thriller Thin Ice (Tunn is) which deals with the burning issues of Arctic changes and international geo-politics, is based on an idea by Endre and Stærmose.

Co-writers are Iceland’s Birkir Blær Ingólfsson, Jónas Margeir Ingólfsson (The Minister) and Jóhann Ævar Grimsson (Stella Blómkvist). Norway’s Cecilie Mosli (Mammon, Grey’s Anatomy) is concept director.  Banijay Rights handles world distribution.

The story kicks off with a research vessel, under attack outside Greenland. At the same time, the Arctic Council is trying to sign an agreement that prohibits environmentally harmful oil drilling in the region.

Behind the agreement is Sweden's Foreign Minister Elsa (Lena Endre), whose political adviser Viktor (Alexander Karim) is aboard the attacked ship. The attack puts Elsa's agreement in jeopardy and puts pressure back home in Sweden on intelligence service officer Liv (Bianca Kronlöf) who is pregnant with Viktor's child.  The stellar Nordic cast also comprises Johannes Bah Kuhnke (Force Majeure), Angunnguaq Larsen (Borgen), Iben Dorner (Borgen) and Reine Brynolfsson (Spring Tide).

According to a statement, the series is very close and personal for Swedish star Lena Endre (Acquitted, The Girl Who Played with Fire), who met with Arctic indigenous people six years ago, in her role as ambassador for Greenpeace. Endre said: “Thin Ice is an important series that dramatises a struggle that is very much real - here and now - and that we must take seriously. It is about climate change, about the indigenous people, the independence of Greenland, and about how short-term interests prevent humanity from making decisions that are crucial to our existence."

She goes on: “Thin Ice is based on an idea from me and producer Søren Stærmose. It has been a long journey with many challenges. Søren has worked diligently to develop the script, find directors, team workers, co-producers and financiers - and now we are here! It has been an amazing experience to film during the toughest period of the Arctic climate - in January to March before the ice melts - with Swedes, Norwegians, Danes, Greenlanders, Finns, Icelanders, Americans, Russians and Balts. I am extremely happy that we have been able to fulfil our dream and vision that we had six years ago.”

Ulf Synnerholm, executive producer at C More/TV4 added: “With the burning current climate debate and an American president who has Greenland on the shopping list, Thin Ice will feel amazingly timely. We are thrilled to finally be able to present this ambitious and super-current thriller that we hope will steer, touch people, and stimulate discussion and debate.”

The series is produced by Yellow Bird’s Stærmose for C More/TV4, in co-production with Iceland’s Sagafilm, in association with France TV, DR, NRK, YLE, RUV, Lumiere Group in the Benelux. The premiere on C More and TV4 is set for spring 2020.
