Deadwind (Karppi) co-written by director Rike Jokela with Jari Olavi Rantala and Kirsi Porkka, received strong reviews and ratings when it first premiered on Yle last March (800,000 consolidated viewers for the first of 12 episodes).

The series produced by Dionysos Films, was an early pick up for Paris-based world distributor APC (About Premium Content).

Commenting on the Netflix deal, Dionysos’ CEO and producer Riina Hyytiä told nordicfilmandtvnews.com: “We are extremely proud to launch Deadwind internationally on Netflix because we know that the Nordic noir fan base will be there and it’s a unique opportunity for our series to reach a large international audience."

She continues: “Signing such a big deal is something you dream about, and at the same time it’s just a conclusion for a long lasting hard work on the series. We’ve been lucky to collaborate with the right persons, and I’m particularly thankful to APC for their excellent job.”

Dionysos Films has teamed up again with Yle, APC and German co-producer H&V Entertainment for season 2, currently in the writing process, with a shooting scheduled for spring 2019.

Other Finnish crime shows previously sold to Netflix include Bordertown and Tellus.

Deadwind was selected by the BBC as one of nine TV shows to watch in August, alongside the Norwegian show Young & Promising season 3 (All4/Walter Presents), Netflix’s crime thriller Ozark season 2 and the UK supernatural thriller The Innocents.
