More than 500 Nordic cinemas have booked the Finnish/Polish animated film voiced in English and Swedish by Stellan Skarsgård, Bill Skarsgård and Alicia Vikander.

The family film directed by Jakub Wrónski and Ira Carpelan was launched last Friday by Storytelling Media in Norway, both with a Norwegian and Sami version, and sold 5,517 tickets from 112 screens. The simultaneous release in 78 Danish screens via Angel Distribution attracted 2,137 people. This Friday Finnish distributor Future Film has booked around 124 screens for the Christmas film featuring one of Finland’s most beloved brands, while Swedish distributor Njutafilms has lined up nearly 190 screens.

“We have five times more copies across the Nordics than our previous stop motion film Moomins and the Comet Chase, said producer Tom Carpelan of Filmkompaniet who added: For the DVD/Bluray release, we will treat our audiences with special behind the scenes material with our stellar voice cast Stellan Skarsgård – big Moomins fan-his son Bill Skarsgård and Alicia Vikander.”

Other territories lined up include France (November 29), Japan (December 2) where a massive exhibition dedicated to Tove Jansson’s characters has been booked for a full year, and Poland where UIP will release it on December 22.

Produced by Finland’s Filmkompaniet and Poland’s animation studios Animoon, Moomins and the Winter Wonderland was created from existing vintage stop motion footage originally co-produced by Jupiter Film and Film Polski in the 1980s, meticulously restored in 4K picture quality. Global Genesis Group handles world sales. Carpelan told nordicfilmandtvnews.com that a new Moomin film-Moominpappa’s Memoirs-will be produced with the same creative team.
