The eight-part series set to premiere on Nent Group’s streamer Viaplay in 2022, is supported by Nordisk Film & TV Fond.

Elvira, the next Danish Viaplay Original, is written by Lærke Sanderhoff (The Sunfish) and Heidi Maria Faisst (The Legacy) from Anne-Sophie Lunding-Sørensen’s acclaimed books about the extremely overweight anti-heroine Elvira Gregersen (35).

Resolutely unambitious, Elvira’s day job consists of answering the phone in a brothel, owned by her childhood friend and policeman Køster. But when a prostitute vanishes, Elvira feels an urge to investigate, which leads to dramatic consequences, unexpected emotions, and the discovery that she might be capable of achieving more than she ever imagined.

Next to newcomer Sara Klein and Peter Plauborg (Cry Wolf), the ensemble cast takes in Anton Hjejle, Bodil Jørgensen (The Kingdom, White Sands), Marijana Jankovic (Maja), Morten Brovn (The Chestnut Man) and Claus Riis Østergaard (Norskov).

Filippa Wallestam, NENT Group Chief Content Officer said: “This multi-layered drama plays out in an unusual setting but says something universal – either we watch life go past us or we jump right into it. Viewers of our latest Danish original can look forward to a unique blend of seriousness, humour and action. Elvira is a fascinating character with a heart that’s 100% in the right place, and it feels great to share her story with audiences around the world.”

Sara Klein describes her character as a completely “regular unusual person, like you and me, with flaws and shortcomings, but also with a big heart and much more power than she herself is aware of.“

The series is produced by Sara Namer and Johannes Rothaus Nørregaard, with SAM Productions’ CEO Meta Louise Foldager Sørensen serving as executive producer.

Co-founded in 2014 by writers Søren Sveistrup, Adam Price, producer Meta Louise Foldager Sørensen in collaboration with Studiocanal, SAM Productions has produced DR’s multi-awarded Ride Upon the Storm and the Netflix shows Ragnarok and The Chestnut Man among others. The company’s highly-anticipated new Borgen created by Adam Price, is due to premiere on DR in 2022, followed by a global launch on Netflix.
