Two documentaries featuring the Sámi community, including the Göteborg competition-bound Historjá-Stitches for Sapmí are among the projects supported in December.

    Logline: Inspired by true events, 1945, Denmark. 12-year old Søren's life is turned upside down when his home is turned into a camp for 500 German civilian refugees. Should he support his parents, who are beginning to help the refugees despite resistance in the village? Or should Søren go against them and instead support the village resistance fighters?

    Anders Walter who won an Oscar - Best Live Action Short Film for Helium in 2013, makes his Danish-language directorial debut. The film is due to start filming in March. Before it Ends is produced by Nordisk Film Production, in collaboration with Growing Stories, co-financing from the Danish Film Institute, Film Fyn, Nordisk Film Distribution, TV 2 Denmark, RÚV, YLE and TV 2 Norway.

    Logline: Sofia, Hedvig and Maja were only 8, 10 and 16 years-old when their mother committed suicide. In Daughters, we meet the sisters as children as well as in their early adult years, as they reflect on what it is like to grow up with grief.

    Malmqvist’s short film On Suffocation screened at Sundance and won the Guldbagge Award-Best Short Film in 2014. She has been working on Daughters since 2011. The film is co-produced by Denmark’s Good Company Films, with support from the Swedish Film Institute, the Danish Film Institute, SBT, DR, Yle and VGTV in Norway.

    Logline: The film follows a group of Sámi artists from an arts’ collective, Mázejoavku, as they rebel against cultural stereotypes and explore themes of Sámi identity. Soon they are dragged into the Alta Conflict, a turning point in Sámi political and cultural life.

    Bresky, director of Bloodroad (Silver Fipa 2001) said together with the Mázejoavku collective, her intention is to tell the world how a group of young Samis changed the world. Filming is due to start in February. The film is coproduced by Iris Film, Filmpool Nord and Dávas Film. Folkets Bio will handle the Swedish release.

    Logline: The film is a poetic and strikingly-told story of the Sámi female artist Britta Marakatt-Labba. Her art describes the Sámi culture, today and historically, and the reindeer husbandry, threatened by the global climate crisis.

    The project was initiated by Jackson who pitched the project to Pelle Nilsson in 2019. Mattias Nohrborg who had worked with Jackson on his earlier film Foodies, and is strongly politically engaged in the defence of Sámi culture, together with Nilsson, then joined the project. The film is co-produced by Filmpool Nord, SVT, with co-financing from SVT, DR, NRK, support from the Swedish Film Institute. The Swedish release is scheduled for March 18. Mer Film Distribution will handle the Norwegian release.

    Logline: The flamboyant ”king of travel” bleeds billions, the beach masseur has no customers and the fired stewardess has lost her identity. Globally 1 out of 10 jobs is related to tourism. How do they survive and what strategies do they use to overcome the crises? How will it be in the future? Will the crisis change our behaviour?

    Mikala Krogh (Scandinavian Star) said “Our intention with the series is to portray the global domino effect the pandemic has triggered in the travel industry. We have during the last many years, created a business chain where we have become dependent on each other, all over the world.”

    The co-directors are currently filming and editing at the same time. The series is co-financed by RÚV, NRK, with support from the Danish Film Institute. The premiere on DR is set for May 2022.

    Logline: Nationalist Gerel Byamba is on a mission to save Mongolia. She wants women to lead and the country to reclaim its spiritual power, destroyed by decades of exploitation by foreigners. Gerel challenges the ultra-right gangs in Ulan bator and a corrupt macho culture ridden with violence and criminality. But to save Mongolia, must she save herself first?

    Explaining to nordicfilmandtvnews.com the genesis of the project, renowned director and co-founder of Elk Film Andreas Dalsgaard (The War Show) who most recently produced the acclaimed documentary The Lost Leonardo said about The Daughter of Genghis: “Together with writer and journalist Knud Brix, the directors read an article about the neo-nationalist gangs of Mongolia. With a background in photojournalism, they went to Ulan Bator in 2016 to do a reportage. Here they met Gerel, and her story captured their attention immediately, and they decided to follow her quest.” Filming is underway and will last another six months. The anticipated premiere is set for 2023.

    Logline: A film director is searching for the meaning of life. A monk commits suicide. His abandoned son is looking for answers.

    Sønderby said Mira Jargil (Dreaming of a Family) was looking for an alternative way of life and found the main character on YouTube. The film will move to the editing stage mid-February. It received support from the Danish Film Institute, Film Fyn, NRK, RÚV and Yle.
